Claire Hankey

Claire Hankey is a mixed media artist living by the Thames Estuary in Leigh on sea, Essex. Her work is created in response to changes in the seasons, daily walks and childhood memories of spending time immersed in nature. Claire’s work is mainly abstract, richly textured and created in multiple layers. She uses natural materials within her art making process and creates her own unique brushes from foraged plants and driftwood collected from the estuary. Claire loves to create work combining different techniques including photocollage, working with fluid paint and using a hand-held sander to reveal earlier layers within a painting. Her work has a sense of history and has been described as ‘sensory’, ‘spectral’ and ‘atmospheric’. Recently, Claire has started to explore working with oil and cold wax, and is enjoying the mysterious and evocative qualities this medium has to offer.

Claire has a BA(Hons) in Art History and is a fully qualified Art teacher. She works from her garden studio in Leigh on Sea and teaches workshops for adults and community groups. She is also the art coordinator at a local preparatory school. Claire has exhibited her work at The Society of Women Artists Exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London, The Leigh Art Trail- 2022 and 2023, Aldeburgh Contemporary Arts and is due to exhibit later this year at Milieu Studios in St Ives, Cornwall.
