As we prepare in the background to be able to throw open the doors to our studios and welcome you all back in a super friendly, yet slightly smaller and more socially distanced way, we are continuing our mission to bring you wonderful ways that you can get creative whilst at home.
On the 13th June, we will welcome our fabulous tutor Tash Manley, of CalligraphybyTash, who will be hosting a live online calligraphy class where participants will be able to learn all about this beautiful skill and try their hand at creating a personalised Father’s Day card and gift tag, using a kit delivered to their front door.
Ahead of the class, we caught up with Tash to find out a little bit more about what inspired her love of all things creative!
So Tash, tell us a little more about you and what started your interest in calligraphy?
“Ever since I was small, I have always had a love for anything art and design. My dream was to do this as a career and I was lucky enough to study at the London College of Fashion. However, as is often the case, my career took a slight detour and I ended up coming away from the creative world and working as a Quantity Surveyor – not quite the same! But after my little girl was born, it gave me a new outlook and I realised I wanted to be able get back to my artistic roots. So I invested in myself by taking some wonderful classes and realised I had a real passion for calligraphy, and that I wanted to turn that passion into a career”
It sounds like calligraphy definitely reignited your creative side, so how did you make this into the successful career you have had to date?
“So much of it was down to friends and family realising just how much I loved what I was doing and offering me the opportunity to create things for them. I also attended various craft fayres and started to find that people genuinely liked what I did! It’s so wonderful when people believe in you. I now have my own Etsy shop – which was a whole new learning curve (and made good use of this lockdown) – so I’m being able to try new things all of the time.”
Amazing! And what is it about calligraphy that makes you love it so much?
“So many things – I don’t think people quite realise just how wonderful it can be. I find that when you are in the zone and creating your designs, you just have so much focus on what you are doing that it allows for escapism and a real feeling of mindfulness. Once you have a good understanding of the basics, the world is your oyster. Being able to create personalised things for yourself and others gives a real sense of achievement.”
We love that! Final question…what will people get to experience if they join your online class?
“The online class is for everyone. For beginners it’s a chance to learn brush strokes and start with how to form letters and move onto words, and for more experienced people, it’s a chance to practice writing sentences and expanding on the decorative elements. I will take everyone through the items in the kit that they will have received and will guide people through making a greeting card and gift tag for a loved one. Although this is a Father’s Day themed class, people are able to make any kind of greetings card they like. I’ll also be creating examples all throughout the class for people to try, which is actually the nice thing about the class being online, it will be up close and personal so you will get to see how intricate the work can be.”
We can’t wait! Any final words for attendees?
“This is your chance to take a couple of hours out of your day and relax. Make sure you have a nice cup of tea at the ready to help you get in the zone! I can’t wait to meet you all!”
Tash’s live online calligraphy class takes place on Saturday 13th June at 10:00 and is available to book on our website here.
