I think it’s fair to say that the recent lockdown has had all of us finding it tough at times. The weather hasn’t helped, and the post-Christmas blues were something else this year!
So that’s why we decided that we would mark the end of January with something a bit more fun, and find a way to put a smile on everyone’s faces.
Vegetable hunting in Leigh-on-Sea
We’ve got some great community spirit here in Leigh-on-Sea, and so we thought it would be the perfect weekend activity to arrange a treasure hunt. With our reasons for leaving the house pretty limited at this point in time, we wanted to make sure this was something that everyone could easily participate in when they went out for their daily exercise.
So, with our thinking caps on, our team came up with the unique plan to send everyone off on the hunt for a carrot – and not just any carrot, but the special golden #createcarrot.
With the support of fantastic local group, The Incredible Edibles and thanks to our friends over at Leigh Library Gardens, we were up bright and early on the morning of the 30th January to hide our golden vegetable in its secret location.
We posted a list of clues on our website and our social media that would guide people the carrot’s hiding place. Then all they had to do was take a picture with the carrot in the background and send it to us before the end of the weekend to be in with the chance of winning a prize.
Who found the #createcarrot?
First of all, a huge round of applause had to be given to all those people who went out hunting on the first day. The weather was, in true British style, horrendous – but that didn’t stop them from donning their raincoats and heading off down the high street in search of our little vegetable.
We heard some wonderful stories of families on a mission to find the carrot, of Brothers and Sisters working as a team in the hopes of winning the prize and even of one family helping another who desperately wanted to find the carrot but wasn’t having much luck. Again, the community spirit in our town shone through, just like the sun which came out for all of five minutes on the last day.
We had lots of entries and some wonderful pictures, but it was the fabulous Milo and Holly who were chosen as the very worthy winners and took home a selection of carroty prizes to grow and eat – including some tasty carrot cake cupcakes by our favourite vegan baker Vanessa.
Thanks so much to everyone who took part, we loved organising it for you all and it was a great way for us to have fun whilst we patiently wait for the time when we can reopen and we get to see you all in person.
