Tinsel Through Time: The Changing Face of Christmas Decorations

Tinsel Through Time: The Changing Face of Christmas Decorations

The festive season brings with it a tapestry of decorations that light up homes and hearts around the world. The tradition of adorning our spaces during Christmas is as ancient as it is joyful, with each ornament hanging on the tree or each wreath adorning a door carrying centuries of history and a sprinkle of magic.

    A Historical Perspective

The roots of Christmas decorations are deeply entwined with history and cultural evolution. In ancient times, during midwinter, people would decorate their homes with evergreen boughs to ward off evil spirits and to symbolise life amidst the cold, barren winter months. The Romans would celebrate Saturnalia, a festival in honour of Saturn, the god of agriculture, by decorating their temples and homes with greenery.

Fast forward to the 16th century, when the tradition of the Christmas tree as we know it began in Germany. It was believed that Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, was the first to add lighted candles to a tree, mimicking the starlit heavens that he admired one clear winter night. The Christmas tree tradition spread throughout Europe and later to America, with each era adding its own touches. The Victorians popularised lavish decorations, incorporating intricate handmade ornaments and gilded nuts

    The Evolution of Ornaments

In the 19th century, with the advancements of the Industrial Revolution, Christmas ornaments began to be mass-produced. This led to a shift from handcrafted decorations to store-bought baubles, which were often less personal but more convenient. Glassblowers in Germany created the first glass ornaments, and their popularity soared. By the 20th century, electric Christmas lights had replaced candles, and decorations became increasingly elaborate.

However, in recent times, there’s been a resurgence of interest in homemade decorations. This brings us to the heartwarming joy and unique personal touch that comes with DIY Christmas décor.

The Delight of Making Your Own

Creating your own Christmas decorations is a wonderful way to inject a bit of personal flair into the festive season. There’s something inherently special about spending time crafting something with your own hands, whether it’s a simple paper chain, a hand-stitched stocking, or an intricately painted bauble. It connects us to the rich history of the holiday, reminding us of a time when each decoration was made with care and had its own story.

Homemade decorations also offer a canvas for creativity and togetherness. Family and friends can gather to create pieces that will not only beautify the home but will also serve as cherished mementos for years to come. Workshops like Create98 in the Southend area offer the perfect setting for such creative endeavours, providing a warm, friendly environment where the community can come together and craft beautiful, personalised Christmas decorations.

In the act of making something by hand, there’s a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the meaning of the season. Moreover, it’s an eco-friendly alternative to the mass-produced decorations that dominate store shelves, allowing for a sustainable celebration that honours the spirit of Christmas.

    Conclusion

From the evergreens of ancient winter solstice rituals to the twinkling lights of modern-day homes, Christmas decorations have always been a beacon of hope and celebration. As we look back on the changing tides of history, we find that the true essence of Christmas decor lies in the joy it brings to our hearts and homes. And perhaps this year, amidst the jingle of bells and the whispers of the winter wind, you might decide to start a new tradition – one that involves rolling up your sleeves and creating something beautiful that’s uniquely yours.

So, this season, why not gather some supplies, maybe even take part in a local workshop, and start crafting? The happiness and pride that come from hanging your very own handmade decoration are unmatched. It’s a tradition that’s timeless, personal, and most importantly, filled with joy.

    Meet the Tutor: Danielle

    Meet the Tutor: Danielle

Meet Danielle, our fantastic art student with a flair for creativity, who’s embarking on a year-long journey of exploration and inspiration here at Create98

Hey Danielle, can you tell us a little bit about your journey into art so far?

I have loved art for as long as I can remember. I completed a fine art GCSE and A Level, obtaining the highest score possible and have decided to pursue a degree in Fine art at Loughborough University. I am currently undergoing a placement year at Create98!

What drew you to art in the first place?

I think that I’ve just always been a creative person, there wasn’t ever actually a moment that I doubted this was what I wanted to pursue.

What are you most looking forward to learning or experiencing at Create98?

I’m most looking forward to meeting all of the different creative tutors and learning all about their practices and hopefully finding some local inspiration.

We’re all about the love for arts and crafts here. Do you have a favourite craft technique or activity?

Outside of my practise, my favourite craft activity would either be lino printing or paper cutting. Sometimes it’s just nice to make a beautiful design that I like for its aesthetics which doesn’t require too much context or meaning like my studio work does. Honourable mention is making cute animal figures out of clay!

If you had to describe your art style in three words, what would they be?

    Fantastical, constructions, narratives.

Can you share a little about your creative process? How do you usually start with a new piece?

Lots and lots of thinking! I research a lot of the concepts that I incorporate into my work heavily beforehand and then I try to represent that in the best way possible. After that, I work out my composition and as a lot of my work includes destructed or constructed canvas, I have to work out where this is the most effective for the storytelling.

Are there any workshops at Create98 that you’re particularly excited to be part of?

As a painter, I’m really excited to be a part of the painting academy. I’m always learning so I’m excited to pick up some tips and tricks!

Finally, for all our readers who are budding artists or craft enthusiasts, do you have any words of encouragement or tips to share?

Unlike what some of my university professors say, not all art has to have a meaning! Don’t think too hard about what you make, just create!

  • Why Your Artistic Plateau is Actually a Sign of Growth

Why Your Artistic Plateau is Actually a Sign of Growth

Why Your Artistic Plateau is Actually a Sign of Growth

Every artist or craftsperson, from beginners to seasoned professionals, has faced this inevitable phase: the plateau. It’s that feeling of stagnation, where despite your best efforts, you can’t seem to make any progress or improvement in your work. It’s tempting to think, “Maybe this isn’t for me,” or “I’ll never get better.” However, let’s debunk that myth and dive into why these plateaus are not just normal, but essential for growth.

Every Master Was Once a Beginner

It’s easy to look at beautiful pieces of art or intricate crafts and think that the artist behind them has always been that good. But every master, no matter how skilled, started from scratch. They too faced challenges, made countless mistakes, and had moments of doubt. The journey of improvement is rarely linear. Instead, it’s dotted with peaks, valleys, and plateaus. Recognising this can shift your perspective from impatience to gratitude for the learning journey

Plateaus are a Time for Consolidation

In the world of learning and skill acquisition, plateaus are not static. They might feel like stagnation, but in reality, they are periods where your brain is consolidating information. It’s a resting phase where past learnings are getting ingrained, making way for future advancements. So, even if it feels like you’re not moving forward, your brain is silently at work, laying the foundation for your next breakthrough.

    Quality Over Quantity

When learning arts and crafts, there’s a lot of emphasis on creating. However, it’s not about how many paintings you make or how many crafts you design; it’s about the journey and the learning that accompanies each piece. Sometimes, it might take ten attempts to understand a technique, and that’s okay. Focus on the process rather than the output.

    The Power of Reflection

Often, we’re our own harshest critics. If you’re feeling like you’re not making progress, take a moment to look back at where you started. Compare your recent work with the ones from a month or a year ago. You’ll be surprised at the subtle improvements you’ve overlooked.

    Embrace the Community

Arts and crafts have a beautiful and supportive community. Sharing your work, joining groups, or attending workshops can provide external perspectives. Sometimes, a fellow artist might see the progress or potential in your work that you’re too close to notice..

    Learning Never Ends

Artistic endeavours are not about reaching a destination; they’re about continuous growth. Even the most skilled artists will tell you they’re still learning. Embrace the mindset of being a lifelong learner, and you’ll find joy in every brushstroke, every stitch, and every craft, irrespective of the outcome.

In your journey with arts and crafts, remember that it’s natural to have moments of self-doubt and to feel like you’re not improving. But growth is not just about the peaks; it’s also about the valleys and plateaus. Celebrate your efforts, embrace the process, and remember: every masterpiece began as a blank canvas.

Choose an arts and crafts course from our selection, and start your journey of discovery, growth, and joy today. Every hiccup, every challenge is a step forward. Embrace it. Celebrate it.

  • The Allure of Mandala Art: Geometry, Spirituality, and Creativity

The Allure of Mandala Art: Geometry, Spirituality, and Creativity

The Allure of Mandala Art: Geometry, Spirituality, and Creativity

Mandalas, with their intricate designs and symmetrical patterns, have fascinated hearts and minds for centuries. Rooted in ancient traditions and spanning various cultures, mandala art is more than just visually pleasing; it’s a journey into oneself and the universe. Let’s explore the mesmerizing world of mandalas, understanding their significance, origins, and the therapeutic power they possess.

    What is a Mandala?

Mandala is a Sanskrit term that means “circle”. Fundamentally, a mandala represents wholeness, unity, and harmony. Although it typically begins with a central point and expands outwards in a circular pattern, mandalas can be filled with a plethora of designs, symbols, and colours.

    Historical and Cultural Significance

Mandalas have ancient roots, tracing back to Indian spiritual traditions. They play a crucial role in Hindu and Buddhist rituals, symbolising the universe, spiritual journeys, and meditative paths to enlightenment.

Outside of the Indian subcontinent, similar patterns and designs can be found in various cultures:

    • Native American Cultures: Medicine wheels and dreamcatchers, resembling mandalas, were employed for healing and protection.
    • Christianity: Rose windows in Gothic cathedrals, with their detailed stained glass, echo the aesthetics of mandalas, signifying spiritual importance.

    Therapeutic Power of Mandalas

Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, introduced the West to the therapeutic potential of mandalas. He believed that drawing and colouring mandalas allowed individuals to connect with their subconscious and address inner conflicts, leading to personal growth and self-awareness.

Today, mandala art therapy is a popular technique. Creating or colouring mandalas can:

    • Reduce stress and anxiety
    • Enhance focus and concentration
    • Foster creativity
    • Promote a sense of well-being

    How to Create Your Mandala

Embarking on your mandala art journey is both straightforward and deeply personal. Here’s a basic guide:

    1. Start with Intention: Before drawing, take a moment to set an intention or purpose for your mandala.
    2. Centre Point: Begin with a dot or small circle in the middle of your paper.
    3. Expand Outwards: Using a compass or freehand, draw larger concentric circles. Fill them with patterns, symbols, or anything that resonates with you.
    4. Choose Your Colours: Colours can carry symbolism. For instance, blue might represent calmness, while red can symbolise passion. Let your intuition guide you.
    5. Enjoy the Process: More than the final artwork, the act of creating is where the magic lies. Immerse yourself in the experience and let go of perfection.

    Mandalas in Modern Life

Mandala patterns have woven their way into various aspects of modern life. From adult colouring books and tattoo designs to architecture and fashion, their charm remains timeless.

Mandalas are more than intricate patterns; they are a union of geometry, spirituality, and self-expression. Whether you’re drawn to them for their beauty, spiritual significance, or therapeutic benefits, engaging with mandala art can be a transformative experience. In a world that often feels chaotic, mandalas offer a sacred space of balance, symmetry, and harmony. Embrace the circle and let your creativity flourish.
